1. Pre-Use Preparation

  • Inspect the balloon for visible damage (e.g., cuts, punctures) and confirm all components (inflation hose, valve, pressure gauge) are intact.

  • Perform a leak test by inflating the balloon to 50% of its rated pressure, then submerging it in water or applying soapy water to check for bubbles.

  • Match the balloon’s diameter to the pipeline’s inner diameter, with a ±5% tolerance for a proper fit. Use a tape measure or caliper for accurate sizing.

  • Clean the pipeline interior to remove debris, sharp objects, or corrosion that could harm the balloon.

  • Ensure the pipeline is structurally sound, with no cracks or deformities that might affect the seal.

  • Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, safety glasses, respiratory protection for confined/hazardous areas).

  • Secure the work area with barriers and signage to block unauthorized access.

2. Installation

  • Apply a water-soluble lubricant to the deflated balloon and the pipeline interior to facilitate insertion and reduce friction damage.

  • Insert the balloon into the pipeline, ensuring it is fully inside and centered at the target location. Avoid placing it near fittings (e.g., elbows, tees) where pressure distribution may be uneven.

  • For vertical pipes, use a guide rope or pole to stabilize the balloon during insertion.

  • Attach the inflation hose to the balloon’s valve, ensure tight connections, and use a clamp or zip tie to prevent dislodgment.

3. Inflation

  • Use a calibrated pressure gauge to inflate the balloon gradually to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure (usually 0.01–0.25 MPa, depending on pipe diameter and material).

  • Do not exceed the rated pressure, as this may cause balloon rupture or pipeline damage.

  • In high-temperature environments (above 50°C), reduce inflation pressure by 30% to account for rubber softening. In low temperatures (below 0°C), increase pressure by 15% to offset rubber stiffness.

  • For pipelines with aggressive chemicals, use a chemically resistant balloon (e.g., CR rubber for oil) and adjust pressure based on the fluid’s properties.

  • After inflation, check for leaks by monitoring the pressure gauge for 5–10 minutes. A stable reading indicates a secure seal; if pressure drops, re-inflate or replace the balloon.

4. During Operation

  • Regularly check the pressure gauge and visually inspect the pipeline for leakage or deformation. For critical applications, monitor pressure every 15–30 minutes.

  • If working in a confined space, ensure proper ventilation and have a rescue plan ready.

  • If pipeline pressure increases (e.g., due to upstream flow), slowly release air from the balloon to maintain the recommended pressure.

5. Deflation and Removal

  • Gradually release air from the balloon via the valve to allow complete deflation. Avoid rapid depressurization, which can damage the balloon or pipeline.

  • Gently pull the deflated balloon out of the pipeline using the guide rope or attached handle, and inspect it for damage during removal.

  • Clean the balloon with water and mild detergent, dry it thoroughly, and store it in a cool, dry area away from sunlight and sharp objects.

  • Document the balloon’s condition, pressure used, and duration of use for maintenance records.

6. Special Considerations

  • For pipelines with flammable gases (e.g., natural gas), use explosion-proof equipment and inert gases (e.g., nitrogen) for inflation. Reduce pressure by 30–50% to lower ignition risks.

  • For large-diameter pipelines (exceeding 1,000 mm), use multiple balloons or specialized models. Ensure even spacing to distribute pressure.

  • For long-term use (e.g., weeks or months), schedule periodic inspections to check balloon integrity and pressure levels.

7. Maintenance and Storage

  • Before each use, inspect the balloon for wear (e.g., cracks, thinning rubber) and replace damaged ones immediately.

  • Test the pressure gauge annually for accuracy using a certified calibration device.

  • Store balloons flat or rolled (never folded) in a temperature-controlled environment (10–30°C) with low humidity.

  • Keep balloons away from oils, solvents, and ozone sources (e.g., electrical equipment) that can degrade rubber.
