Common Types and Classification Characteristics of Steel Gates in Hydraulic Engineering

Steel gates are vital hydraulic structures widely applied in reservoirs, river regulation, water supply and drainage, and flood control projects. With outstanding structural toughness, durable service life and flexible operating performance, they undertake critical tasks such as water retaining, water diversion, flood discharge and flow adjustment. According to different structural forms, opening and closing modes, and application scenarios, steel gates can be divided into multiple mainstream types. Each type has unique structural advantages and applicable working conditions. This blog will systematically introduce the common classification and core characteristics of hydraulic steel gates to help you quickly distinguish and select suitable steel gate equipment.

1. Vertical Sliding Steel Gate

The vertical sliding steel gate is one of the most classic and widely used gate types in water conservancy projects. Its gate leaf is installed vertically on the guide rail of the gate pier, and it realizes opening and closing operations through vertical up-and-down sliding driven by hoisting equipment such as screw hoists and winches.

This type of steel gate features a simple and compact structure, stable operation and strong adaptability. It can adapt to various water level differences and is suitable for flat water inlets, reservoir spillways, urban river sluices and conventional water retaining structures. In the fully closed state, the gate completely covers the water passing section to achieve efficient water retaining; when opened, the gate leaf rises to the top of the gate slot, which will not block the water flow and ensures smooth flood discharge. In addition, the vertical sliding steel gate has good sealing performance, low failure rate and convenient daily maintenance, making it the preferred type for most conventional water conservancy projects.

2. Radial Steel Gate (Tainter Gate)

Radial steel gate, also known as tainter gate, belongs to the rotary steel gate category. Its gate leaf is designed in an arc shape, with a fixed hinge shaft set at the upstream or downstream side of the gate body. The gate rotates around the fixed shaft to complete opening and closing actions, driven by hydraulic cylinders or connecting rod transmission devices.

Different from sliding gates, radial steel gates rely on arc structural mechanics to bear water pressure, which can effectively reduce the driving force required for operation. They have the advantages of light operating load, fast opening and closing speed, and large overflow capacity. This type of gate is mostly used in reservoir main spillways, large river flood discharge sluices and hydropower station water release structures. It is especially suitable for working conditions requiring frequent flood discharge and rapid water level regulation. The only limitation is that its structural design is relatively complex, and it has higher requirements for installation accuracy and foundation construction.

3. Flap Steel Gate

Flap steel gate is a kind of self-balancing hydraulic gate with a simple and lightweight structure. It is generally hinged at the bottom of the gate slot, and the gate body can automatically flip and open or close according to the change of upstream and downstream water level pressure difference, without manual or electric driving equipment in most scenarios.

When the upstream water level rises and the water pressure difference reaches the set value, the gate will automatically flip open to discharge water and reduce the water level; when the water level drops and the pressure difference decreases, the gate will reset and close to realize automatic water retaining. Relying on the self-balancing mechanical principle, the flap steel gate realizes unmanned automatic operation, which is very suitable for urban landscape rivers, small and medium-sized drainage channels, tidal control sluices and farmland water conservancy projects. It has the prominent advantages of energy saving, environmental protection and low operation and maintenance cost.

4. Stoplog Steel Gate

Stoplog steel gate is a temporary and portable steel gate structure, which is composed of multiple groups of independent steel stoplog sections. During use, the stoplogs are sequentially hoisted and inserted into the gate slot to form a complete water retaining barrier; after the construction or maintenance work is completed, the stoplogs are lifted out one by one for storage and reuse.

This type of steel gate is not used for long-term water retaining operation, but is mainly applied to temporary water interception during the maintenance and repair of hydraulic facilities such as sluices, pumps and water pipelines. It has the characteristics of flexible assembly, convenient disassembly, reusable performance and low comprehensive cost, and is an indispensable auxiliary hydraulic facility in project construction and daily equipment maintenance.

Summary

Different types of steel gates have distinct functional positioning and application advantages. Vertical sliding gates are suitable for conventional stable water retaining and flow regulation; radial gates excel in large-flow and rapid flood discharge scenarios; flap gates are optimal for automatic water level control in small and medium-sized water systems; stoplog gates focus on temporary water interception and engineering maintenance. In practical hydraulic engineering construction, the matching steel gate type should be selected according to project functional requirements, water level difference conditions and operating frequency to ensure the safety, efficiency and economy of water control operation.
