What Is an Air Shield Dam? Working Principle and Core Structure
An air shield dam, also known as pneumatic shield dam, is an innovative hydraulic control structure combining rigid steel shield plates and flexible EPDM rubber air bladders. It has become a popular choice for modern river regulation, water storage and flood control projects around the world. Different from conventional sluices and pure rubber dams, it uses compressed air as power to lift or lower the dam body.
The main components include steel shield panels, rubber air bladders, hinge bases, air pipelines and an automatic pneumatic control system. The steel plate bears water pressure and protects the internal rubber bladder, while the air bladder provides supporting force. There is no intermediate pier required, so the whole channel remains unobstructed.
When water storage is needed, the air compressor fills the bladder with compressed air. The inflated bladder pushes the steel shield upward to form a water retaining barrier. Operators can adjust water level accurately by controlling air pressure. For flood discharge, release the air inside the bladder. The steel shield will lie flat completely on the foundation, maximizing the overflow cross-section for flood passage.
This unique design solves many drawbacks of traditional hydraulic structures, such as sediment accumulation, floating debris blockage and high maintenance workload. The combination of rigid steel and flexible rubber achieves both impact resistance and flexible operation.
